Rivergate Quarter
The city's river edge: nineteenth-century warehouses, new towers, and a mile of public quay.
Rivergate was the city's freight quarter until the docks moved east. What is left is a mile of stone quay, a run of brick warehouses that survived because nobody could work out what else to do with them, and — since 2016 — a small number of towers on the vacant plots between.
The quarter works because it was never rebuilt all at once. A tower sits beside a warehouse sits beside a chandler's yard that still sells rope. Residents get river light on one side and a proper street on the other.

The river runs broadly east–west here, so north-facing apartments get even, glare-free light and the south side gets the sun on the water.
Service charges
Tower apartments carry a concierge and plant charge. Warehouse conversions are usually cheaper to run but have fewer shared services.
